Comments: I am the kennel manager of a no-kill special needs shelter just outside of Des Moines, Iowa. That is smack in the center of the mid-west usa. I am very impressed with your information. I actually got to your site by asking for pet recipes. I am always making homemade treats for our special dogs here at the shelter. We are an exception to the rule in our area being that we spend hours socializing our dogs. We are always being told how clean our shelter is but most important how social our dogs and cats are. Our staff is told at the beginning of hire that they will never be reprimanded if caught brushing a dog or playing with a cat teaser and a cat. You are so positive in your advice which I like. I always train the staff to make it fun for the dogs to go your direction instead of where they want to go. I have printed off every page of your site and I intend to put it in a notebook for the staff to look over. We also get phone calls on advice on how to handle a particular problem (and not always an animal that was adopted from here). We sure feel good when we can help the family talk thru a problem and keep the animal in its home instead of going to a shelter. Thank you for what you do. This swine has been entered in 10 dog shows and never finished lower than 5th in his class, this swine has now done the ultimate and qualified for Crufts 2001. He is a wonderful dog, but does suffer some separation anxiety. I have done the kong stuffed with peanut butter and am now using Rescue Remedy. It appears to be helping. My neighbor tells me he only starts barking when I am due home from work at night. I leave him outside when I am at work. He has a crate, a kid's wading pool, trees & shade. We are enrolled in obedience class, having completed an 8 week beginning course and presently halfway through the 8 week intermediate session. It has helped him a great deal. He is semi anorexic when left alone. He will leave pig ears, cookies, kibble untouched until I return and then he gobbles them. We sent him to a training course and sadly developed 2 vices, the first being that he barks rather a lot even at the slightest sounds and he will not mix with other dogs and tends to be agressive towards them. Because of this we are unable to let him off the lead as he just wants to find another dog!! He had guard dog training at the centre we sent him to but he is fine with people and children, just other dogs are the problem!!
